Remember When?

Went to the store the other day to buy salmon for dinner. Once this was not a big deal. Now one has to spend at least ten minutes per package to find and read the country of origin. Country of origin is the country of manufacture, production, or growth from where an article or product comes. There was a time you went to the store and Made in America was clearly labeled on the package. Wild catch Alaskan salmon should not have a label hidden deep in the fold that say product of China.

It’s not just fish and food for human consumption that’s labeled from other countries. America always had imports, but the product actually stated imported where it could be seen. Many of us use imported olive oil, cars, Swiss watches, Kashmir’s Cashmere, Pashmina shawls, saffron and Australian lamb. But when you want Pacific salmon, you’d like it to be a product of Alaska.

“November 18, 2011 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an important bulletin warning consumers that chicken jerky products (also marketed as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with serious illness in dogs.” Now although products are labeled American company, you have to keep reading the label because the product may be made in China, and appear on the recall list. Sadly, it’s not the first time a simple treat like chicken jerky for dogs has been recalled by the FDA. The FDA has issued prior cautionary warning concerning chicken jerky products in September 2007 and a Preliminary Animal Health Notification in December of 2008. Now on top of keeping current on better food choices for the family, pet owners have to seek out The Dog Food Advisor. The Advisor publishes independent assessments to help pet owners make better selections when shopping for dog food.

Two hours later, in the ended up not buying any doggy treats. I opted to go home and find a recipe to make homemade jerky. I did have to buy chicken that was not on my list. I brought the salmon with the MSC certified sustainable seafood label, although it was a “product of China, processed for America.” Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is committed to being the world’s leading certification program for sustainable wild-capture seafood. According the MSC website, the ecolabel appears on worldwide seafood products, and each product can be traced back to a certified sustainable fishery. “MSC standards and requirements meet global best practice guidelines for certification and ecolabeling programs.”

Once home and dinner was made, we had faith and blessed the food. Dog was happy with her jerky!
