Edric Sizemore Shows Off the iSafe Backpack

Life Saving Invention

African-American inventor, Edric Sizemore of Chicago,IL filed a patent application #Appl. No.: 696,374 on August 13, 1996. The patent was issued May 5, 1998. The patent was for a portable personal security system. The system was described as a battery powered portable personal alarm system enclosed in a bag containing a carrying theft-resistant strap to avoid theft of the alarm system. The bag accommodates a siren and a visual signal generator located to adjacent openings which generates a loud discernible noise and a visual signal. An arming and panic switch allows activation of the siren and the visual signal at the same time. The visual signal can be a high intensity strobe lamp which emits a high-intensity and high frequency light signal through a visual window.

In August 9, 2000 Sizemore filed a patent for a backpack replicating the security bag. This backpack is the focus of the story. It’s a personal security backpack emits audio alarm signals to catch attention. It’s used at a crime scene or crisis situation and powered by a portable battery pack easily reachable module section the backpack. The two shoulder straps backpack has a spacious compartment to kids’ books and supplies. The alarm system remains obscured under an access flap. Two siren signal producers are located within the backpack immediate openings. They produce a loud noticeable noise with the unmuffled sirens. A panic switch is built up on the backpack's shoulder strap to provide easy access for activating the sirens. An adjustable anti-theft strap fastens across the chest, from one shoulder strap to the other, preventing the personal security backpack from easily being taken from the child. Sizemore redesigned the concept in 2004 after watching the security videotape of Carlie Brucia being abducted and then learning of her death on national television.

Although school’s started and school supplies brought, if you have a security concern for your children, this is a good investment. In 2005 father of Carlie Brucia, the 11-year-old girl who was snatched at the rear a car-wash in Sarasota, FL supported the backpack. During the same year, the backpack was demonstrated on the Montel Williams Show. More recently the backpack has been demonstrated on several news channels across the nation both on TV and radio in time for the start of school.

Edric Sizemore is President of EDCO Innovations Inc. Sizemore has test-marketed his patented Guardian Backpack(TM) since 1999. Sizemore’s obsession for thwarting assaults on women and children was aroused by the kidnapping and murder of school children. He successfully constructed a backpack much like any standard-sized backpack normally used by school children, high school and college students. The lightweight Security Backpack is inconspicuously equipped with two 130-decibel sirens that can be heard within a 100-yard radius and a high-intensity strobe light that can be seen from up to 400 yards away. The system is powered by a standard double-A (AA) batteries. The alarm can run continuously for up to five hours before replacing batteries and is louder than most car alarms.

The tragedies of children kidnapped and murdered bring into focus the need to emphasize prevention, and including the problem of increased bullying. Additional uses for the backpack are by joggers, hikers and skiers. The backpack could be useful to injured or stranded individuals.

On Monday, May 18, 2009,a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for ISAFE BACKPACKS & BAGS. This trademark is owned by Inventive Concepts International, 1200 Kirk St., Elk Grove Village, IL 60007. The backpack has been adapted for holding laptops and notebook computers, for holding or carrying portable telephones and telephone equipment and accessories. There is a wheeled messenger bags especially adapted for holding laptops.

What a marvelous product. The last thing a kidnapper wants is attention brought to his/her action.
